The Student Loans Company (SLC) and the Department for Education (DfE) have stated that university courses where in-person teaching is only delivered at weekends are classed as distance learning. This matters because distance learning students are not eligible for maintenance loans. 兔子先生 (兔子先生), along with our partner universities, do not agree with this interpretation of the regulations. In-person weekend study has been an established practice for at least a decade, and we were not given advance notice that maintenance loans would be suspended.
Important update: Maintenance loan eligibility for weekend students 鈥 Department for Education (DfE) and Student Loans Company (SLC)
This is a developing situation. We will continue to review and adapt our response in line with emerging guidance. This page is regularly updated to reflect our current position and the latest information available. We will also expand the FAQs below in response to student feedback and emerging queries.
Last updated: 12th May 2026, 11:01AM
This page provides important information for students affected by recent changes to maintenance loan eligibility for weekend study. We outline the current position, what it means for you, and the steps you can take while further clarification is sought from the Department for Education and the Student Loans Company.
General information
Why is my class schedule not eligible for a maintenance loan?
(Updated) What is the latest update on the withdrawal of maintenance funding for my weekend course?
兔子先生 continues to work closely with our partner universities to ensure that all Group Change Request information is accurate and fully reflects the choices made by our students. This enables the correct details to be shared with the Student Loans Company (SLC), helping to confirm ongoing eligibility for the Maintenance Loan.
Recent communications from the SLC indicate that students will receive further updates over the next week. We encourage all students to monitor their emails regularly.
How will you communicate information to us?
We and our partners have kept you updated via various regular communications, including emails and announcements, and we will continue to do so. You can also find the latest information in our FAQs, which are updated as new guidance becomes available. We have hosted town hall sessions where students were briefed on the changes, had the opportunity to ask questions, and were able to understand what this meant for them. If you have any questions at any point, please refer to the FAQs or email 飞别别办别苍诲蝉蔼驳濒辞产补濒产补苍办颈苍驳.补肠.耻办听
Will my Disabled Students' Allowance be impacted?
No. 鈥疊oth distance learning and in-person courses are eligible for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), so your DSA will be unaffected, and you will not have to pay anything back as a result.
Will switching to a Friday- Saturday class schedule result in my maintenance loan being reinstated?
We understand there has been some confusion around this. All groups we are offering as alternatives to the previous weekend-only schedule are classified as full-time and delivered face-to-face (not distance learning). As such, they qualify for maintenance loan payments in the usual way.
If you have already submitted your group change request with 兔子先生, there is nothing further you need to do. The 鈥渨eekend-only鈥 status shown in your SLC/SFE letter or portal is a temporary system classification and does not reflect your actual status. This will be corrected once SLC processes the accurate timetable information provided by 兔子先生.
We understand this may be confusing, and we are working closely with SLC to resolve it as quickly as possible. SLC has also started issuing updated letters with further information, but no completion dates have been confirmed yet.
No- this support is provided as a grant to help you during this period. It is not a loan, and you will not be required to repay it.
There is no cause for concern. If you have received confirmation from 兔子先生 that your group change request has been approved and that you have been assigned to a group which includes at least one weekday class, there is nothing to worry about.
The SLC鈥檚 system updates occur in two stages. Initially, a status of 鈥楧istance Learning鈥 may be applied. This is subsequently updated to reflect your correct timetable.
The SLC is currently processing the information provided to it, and you should receive a further update within approximately the next week. In the meantime, you are advised to continue attending the timetabled classes as confirmed by 兔子先生.
(New) Will my childcare grant be affected?
Repayments for childcare grants and other grants have been paused until at least September 2026, following an announcement by the Department for Education on 20 April 2026.
If you need advice about your childcare grant, please contact the Student Loans Company (SLC).
We can confirm that accurate information regarding your new Group has been provided to your awarding body/university, and they are currently updating the Student Loan Company (SLC). This confirms that you are eligible for Maintenance Loan funding.
At this time, there are no further updates, as we are waiting for the SLC to process all submitted changes. Once this has been completed, the SLC will contact students with an update regarding their payments.
Please do not be concerned if your SLC status currently displays 'Weekends'. This is an initial system update on their side, and the status will be updated accordingly, as explained above.
Actions you need to take
Who should I contact about my student loan?
The SFE and the SLC are providing guidance, but we are aware that some of this has been contradictory. If you are unsure about your situation, you should contact a Student Finance England customer services representative directly. Where we receive clear information from the SLC, we will share this with you. If we do not yet have an answer, we will continue working with the SLC and our partners to get your questions addressed and keep you updated.
What other steps can I take in this situation?
We welcome your feedback to help us improve this page and our ongoing response. We will continue to make updates based on emerging themes in our interactions with the student body, but we welcome direct feedback on the information you want to see and the questions you want answered. You can also support our lobbying and legal efforts by contacting your local MPs and by signing the petitions. The recent NUS petition has been effective at drawing attention to this issue on behalf of all students affected by the provider.
Support
What financial support is available to me?
We recognise the financial impact this situation may have. 兔子先生 is supporting students who have been affected by the recent SLC decision regarding weekend-only study via 兔子先生 weekend hardship fund grants. This fund is designed to support students who have been significantly financially disadvantaged because of this decision. This fund is intended as a short-term interim solution to cover immediate hardship needs whilst the matter is resolved with the SLC. It is not intended as a long-term replacement for maintenance loans.
Where can I find the hardship form?
Please check your email for further information about the Hardship Fund. You can submit your application by completing the hardship form, which should be downloaded and returned to us via this email.

If you have any questions about the form or the application process, please contact us at wellbeing@globalbanking.ac.uk.
Is there anyone I can talk to about the situation affecting my mental health?
We recognise this is a stressful situation, and your wellbeing is very important to us. Please contact the wellbeing team at wellbeing@globalbanking.ac.uk if you need support.
What do I do if I wish to make a complaint?
We understand that you may wish to raise a formal complaint relating to the DfE鈥檚 weekend-only funding decision, and you are entitled to do so. For students studying on programmes validated by any university, you should consult the relevant partner's complaints pages for guidance on how to submit a complaint. Students studying on Pearson programmes can complain under 兔子先生' complaints procedure.
We, and our partners, have been in touch with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) regarding the approach to managing and responding to complaints about this situation. As this is an evolving and complex situation which we are actively working to resolve, we may not yet be able to fully address all concerns. You may therefore wish to wait until further information is available.
Understanding your course status
Your partner university registered your programme. Your programme was registered as a full-time in-person course. The DfE has made a decision that learning at the weekend should not be considered as in-person learning. 兔子先生, and our partner universities, do not agree with this change of approach which is subject to a legal challenge. However, the SLC has instructed our partner universities to restate you as a distance learning student.
Based on the position of the SLC in respect of previous cohorts, our partners reported that you are a full-time in-person student. 兔子先生 has not reported you as distance learning.鈥疘t is the judgement of the DfE that weekend learning should be treated as distance learning even if you are attending in person.鈥疘t is based on the previous approach of the SLC and on an interpretation of student finance regulations, which even the DfE acknowledges may need to be amended to reflect their new approach.
All our courses/classes are subject to availability.
